Roseville Album

More rain and more sewing here in Nebraska. I have finished the center of Roseville Album and all of the blocks are sewn together. I am now working on the border. I always planned to change the applique border of this pattern to something simpler. At some point I cut out 4 inch circles in red Kaffe Fassett prints thinking I would frame the quilt in circles eventually.

The circles became a semi circle border which I really like.

Then I added a row of smaller circles.

Now the question is should I add a second row of smaller circles?

There are three more days of rain forecast for our area so more sewing is in the future. Our weather turned a little severe yesterday. One of my quilting friends sent me this picture of a storm cloud she saw on her way home from work, this eventually did turn into a Category 1 tornado with a short touchdown.

Luckily there were no injuries and only minor property damage. In the meantime spring flowers are blooming.

This tulip is my first blossom of some tulip bulbs my son brought back from a trip through Amsterdam

genuine Dutch tulips!

Mariner's Compass

I just finished sewing the next border on the Mariner's Compass quilt. This border was made with hexagon flowers appliquéd in scrappy square in a square blocks. The quilt is a BOM from homesteadhearth.com. I do not have the fabric stash for a scrappy quilt like this and Homestead Hearth is sending the prettiest fabrics.

For this border they sent a huge variety of 6 inch squares and fat 16ths and it was up to me to fussy cut the hexagon flowers, and choose the centers and corners on the square in the square blocks and use them where I want in the border.

I like this type of BOM that leaves fabric placement up to me.

I also did a little fun sewing on a group quilt that will go in a charity auction later this year.

We started with gold kite shapes and then there is basically no wrong fabric you can add to these foundation strip pieced blocks.

When the triangles are put together you get four pointed stars surrounded by spiderwebs.

Roseville Album is getting closer and closer.

I have finished the last of the corner blocks

and now I am about to start the last long border.

The shapes on this border seem large so hopefully they will not take long to applique. That polka dot squirrel just makes me smile.

We have had a lot of rainy weather lately which has kept me indoors sewing and getting lots done on my different projects.

Rowdy Flat Library Quilt

I have just received the first pattern for Susan Smith's new mystery block of the month the Rowdy Flat Library quilt. This is the first mystery quilt I have ever done. I am not much of a gambler and not willing to spend so much time and effort on a project I might not like in the end, but I do like all of Susan Smith's other quilts and I like applique. There are a few sneak peaks out in web land of others who are a couple months ahead of me and so far I like what I see.

The center of this block and I believe at least a couple more blocks is a toile fabric. This is a close up of my toile, it is a faint pink but had a couple good scenes on it so I could vary the centers of future blocks.

I have been doing more of the prepared starched under edges of the applique pieces and before I knew it I had the whole block prepped and glued down so now it is just applique away. The threads in the corner flower pots are for stitching down the circular flowers, I gather the circles with the applique thread and then just leave an 8 inch or so tail to sew them down.

 

I also finished another block of Roseville Album,

and another block on the Caswell quilt.

 

It has been all applique for me the last couple weeks which is my favorite.
